New X5 vs X3
If I spec up a new 30d X3 and add pro nav, xenons, auto tailgate, 18" alloys, effectively adding things you get as standard on a new X5 30d; it comes to £42,735. The new X5 30d is £47,895. That's only £5k difference and it's 46mpg combined. Food for thought...

Well it's also wider, and heavier. When I bought the X3, I bought it because it was narrower than the X5. I use a lot of single track roads.
My only regret on the X3 is /perhaps/ the 3.0d.. on the other hand, I have a lot of fun with the manual gearbox so...

If I've read correctly between the lines, the X5 doesn't drive as well as the X3 or even the old X5. The new X5 is more refined than the X3, interior is better but is larger which can be a plus or minus. Lease rates for the X5 are currently quite a lot above those of the X3, possibly due to supply issues.
Whilst the X3 is not a stunning beauty, the X5 imo is closer to an overweight duck.

I had a lift back from the local BMW garage in a new 30d X5.
Felt only marginally larger then the X3, and slightly more refined. Interior was not much better then the X3. It will probably depreciate more quickly than the X3 in UK. I don't need the extra size, and would not pay the extra money. |

Would it depreciate more though given it's brand new and the F25 is now 3 years old, and with a like-for-like, you'd be comparing an X3 with £5k of options against a base model X5 with all those options as standard, so you'd expect the option-ed up X3 to get hit a little harder on the depreciation - all conjecture on my part! I think if I was in the market, it would be worth a test drive. Just wondering if any other X3 owners / potential buyers are considering it

My only input is that
I don't need the extra size. I would like to see a 3.0 - 4.0 D in the X3.

I'll agree that the engine has something to do with it, but I think BMW has also worked to improve the electric power steering since my '11 was built. The new X5 felt much better, despite its extra heft. It may be that they've done running changes on the X3 steering, as well.

Yup, I spec'd up a couple of variants of the X5 as I think its great.
Spoke to a few people who had the previous X5 and their general feedback was that its crap in the snow, and drinks a lot of petrol. When I come to change, it will be near to the top but under the new Range Rover Sport Discount levels on the X5 compared to what I got on my 3 is 5% less.. and the value on my X3 v outstanding finance is very good, leaving me with a nice bit of change, not so sure the X5 would do the same. I'm guessing they will stick the same interior in the next X3, so maybe ill be tempted to stick with that |
