Question So to get the best ride, I need DHP package?

According to the conclusions here:

I know it goes against what everyone typically thinks about with a BMW but there are times when I just need a nice smooth ride on long stretches of HWY. If I read it right, without the DHP package, the X3 has a "middle of the road" kind of suspension as determined by BMW. So to get a suspension change in "Comfort" mode, I in fact need have the DHP package, correct?

It also improves the ride when you want to drive in sport mode. It helps the suspension stay sporty, but filter out jarring inputs.

All suspension systems are a set of compromises, whether set up to be inclined towards comfort or sport.

To widen the suspension envelope, a system with more than one setting is obviously going to have less compromise. If those settings are active, an even wider working range in each mode. I've a 5-series with Adaptive Drive (3 base settings) and compared to any previous BNW I've owned, this gives so much more scope to have the ride I want for driving mood and the roads I drive. Best of all worlds, IMO.

Yes get the DHP. If need to, save on other features or packages.

I can tell you that the 19" (with SAP) and no DHP is probably not the "best" ride... but I still enjoy it!

Best is clearly subjective. I don't want a floaty, detached feel -- that's not my definition of a "good" ride. I like BMW for it's sporty, controlled, connected style. For me, the 19's, the sport setting, and the DHP are a great combo. (Not to criticize the ride w/o the DHP as noted above). But then I can set it to normal and get enough of a cushiony, floating ride to satisfy passengers. For me, the flab associated with the 17's would be unpleasant.

Today's options become standard features in future. When I bought my X3 2005, Servotronic was a $250 option. In the current model it is standard feature. I didn't get it in my recent 2013 purchase. X3 is a very good suv, the only problem being when all the options are added the price will be close to an X5 premium edition. My advice is that your test drive both DHP and Non-DHP versions without knowing the presence of DHP.

I have DHP (with 18" wheels) and it is a really nice drive, especially in sport: just a really good balance.

Had my Winter tyres fitted by dealer this week. 17" - noticed a big difference - Not sure which I prefer, see how I get used to them.

+1disadvantage of 17" or DHP normal is disconnected floaty video game driving. Not for me personally. Even with 19s and sports suspension the ride is ok because the tyres still have a relatively big sidewall - it's not like an M3 with low profile tyres and a sports suspension

Yep, get the DHP for the best ride quality and the option to adjust the ride quality according to road conditions, driving style and driver/passenger preference. This option is a must have IMO.

Of course, BMW could make things easier and just make this standard equipment....

Hi,

I have the DHP with 17" winter tyres (RFT) at the moment and love the fact you can swap between the different suspension settings as your mood changes.
A must have for me.

For the summer setup I will have 18" RFT. Will see when the time comes, but for now loving it!

does any one a 19 inch wheel with the electronic damper control option?
i am about to order a car and love the look of the 19inch 309s. i am terrified of a hard ride so i was thinking of specifying the electronic damper control. am i doing the right thing? please help....i want to order in the morning.

msport have 19 inch wheels and lots of cars are equipped with dynamic dampers.

My car has the able and the ride is very good.

I have the 309s and the dampers. I like a sporty, firm ride and usually drive in Sport mode (chassis and steering only). I find that acceptably firm but smoother than my previous sport suspension BMWs. The Normal mode is smoother yet. It will not provide the floaty, disconnected, feel no cracks and bumps at all kind of ride some other manufacturers provide, though.
