When I was looking around at new X3 to replace my first gen X3 one salesman suggested brakes pads would need to be replaced every 30k. I have done 57k in current X3 without needing new pads. (managed similar in previous car)
It is something (if I remember) I'll ask when I pick up new car tomorrow |

I have 1400 miles on my 2013 X3 and have noticed the rear disks look more "used" than the fronts - no wear at all on the fronts and there are lines on the rears.

x2! BMWs definitely drag the rears to prevent front end squat. Electronic brake force distribution. BMW has been using it for years. On leisure stops the rears are engaged first and essentially drag you to a stop. On panic stops or during spirited braking the fronts brake with more force if you are aggressive with the brake pedal and you can definitely feel the front end squat.

I managed to get 30,000kms out of the rear pads of my RWD E90 325i, and I know traction kicks in a lot more with snow duty. What has changed in the F25 that makes it not last as long?

Weight. I think the E90 325 was about 900 lbs lighter than an X3. That makes a huge difference. Also the X3 has more suspension travel thus braking in normal cases is rear biased. While the E90, being much more sporty, can afford to distribute brake force more evenly due to the tighter suspension and being less prone to squat at the front end.

Bumping. Has anybody done a DIY or inspected the brakes and found that the rear pads still have a way to go even though the maintenance minder is calling for service?
