LOL I hope you are kidding, more valid???? There is no scientific approach, it is subjective evaluation. Tire discussion can be like politic or religion discussion but I don't really rely on This Tirerack results IMO because comments depend on the region, type of car, driving experience and exposure to other brand of tire, so many variable. This is just another source of information.

For example, sorted by winter performance, the Blizzak LM25 are fairly high and I used them 6 years, these are the worst tire in snow or ice!! Dry and wet were fine. Who's right, me or those results? This is similar to Trip advisor, you have to be careful.

Protegez-vous used a scientific approach and experts in this area with real tests in the condition of our region! I am not saying they have the truth but this is more credible.

I looked at the TireRack survey. It's worthless, because it's just the opinions of various consumers (You only drive one car, and keep winter tires 2 to 3 years. How can you compare any two sets?).

I looked at the link that I posted, under "methodology". It's also a survey (!) of "tire vendors non affiliated with any brand". Sadly, this seems worthless to me too.

ConsumerReports.org is a richer organization, and they can afford to run real scientific tests. I just subscribed minutes ago (for $26/year!). They say the "Nokian WR G2" is the best "performance winter tire". The Pirelli and the Dunlop score exactly equally in everything that concerns me, but the Dunlop gets a slightly better "noise" rating.

Yes. You get a receipt for tire storage, so it's not like he's going to run away with my tires. Plus he's been in business for years and he was recommended by a friend that I trust.

His prices are the same as ordering from TireRack and having it installed locally. It's the dealer's prices that are ridiculous.

If you don't need performance winters then the Xice is a good choice. Consumer Report have em rated highest. Personally I think I will go with regular winter tires. I dont drive that fast in the summer yet so winter I should be good to stay behaved.

Oh and the parts guy from my dealership said the 17" would not work on the 35i cuz of the bigger brakes.

Thx for the tip. I'll check it out. Personnaly, i would stay with runflats for winter. Dont want to be stucked with a flat and no equipment. Dont know how roadside assistance would react to a flat with non-run flat tires.

The tires I chose are run flat, which is why they're more expensive.

For what it's worth, my dealer said that if it's a non-run flat it's not covered by road side assistance. Then again, it's probably cheaper to tow it than to buy run flats.

If you wanna win, buy a Finn

We have snowy and icey roads here about 5 months a year. Finnish Nokian Tyres are good, Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 with studs is a good option.

A little cheaper but as good is Continental ContiIceContact with studs.

They were just tested by Finnish car magazine:

WS70 is available in that size, and also Sottozero 210.

Finally made my choice, all a matter of taste but it will suit my needs. Negotiated hard and got it for 2000$ all taxes in (~1750$ CAD before tax). 245/50/18 Dunlop Wintersport M3 with RTX Berlin BMW replica wheels.

yup but when I was in Montreal, I was dealing with Gordon Goodyear in NDG, they are super nice and were giving me good price (they carry dunlop too).

From NDG, the quote was 2680$ all tx/installation in, but for wintersports 3D instead of 3M, with BMW replica rims. 245/18/50.

Much higher than your QC dealer.

Nice choice. In a test, they were second behind Michelin X-Ice.

Michelin scored 7,6 out of 10 and Nokian 7,5.

Dunlop was second to last with 6,7 out of 10.

Tests were done in Finland... and these were studless winter tyres.

I went for Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 (with studs) and total with rims and taxes they were 1000€. Though I have to say the rims are replica, not BMW oirignal.
