Upgrading Wheels & Tyre's
Hi everyone,
I have been circulating the internet trying to find information about this and was asked by a friend, hey have you joined a forum? My answer of course NO but also then questioning myself why haven't i? Leading to that, i decided to join this forum and i am hoping my questions can be answered. I drive a 2014 BMW X3 XDrive20D(F25). I am currently on 18 inch wheels which are wrapped around Pirelli's P7 Cinturato 245/50/R18. I wanted to upgrade my wheels to 20 inch. Went to the local wheel/tyre shop and was told it's impossible because; - X3's are very sensitive and changing wheels will cause transfer box issues - The tyre's must be star rated and if they are not, it will cause issues as well - Also i was wondering if i could use non RF tyres or must they be RF's? Hope someone can help me here Regards |

Aside from ensuring that tires on all four corners are exactly the same diameter so as not to damage your drive line, you might want think long and hard before going to 20" wheels and tires. Whether you go with RFs or not, you could be unpleasantly surprised by the harsh ride that comes with 20" wheels. Clearly, everyone is entitled to his/her own ideas concerning aesthetics, but this project will involve a considerable investment in new wheels and tires. Unless the roads in New Zealand are silky smooth, it may not take long to consider a return to the relative comfort of OE wheels and tires.
You may notice the endless postings concerning the value of RF tires versus the advantages of conventional tires. While some of these advantages center on performance issues, many others switch out of RFs for a better ride. Of course the vehicle's ride will get progressively worse as one goes to larger wheels and lower-profile tires. |

There's a post on here for X3s with 20inch wheels. Just about everyone, including myself go with the same tires size in order to maintain rpm between tires, at least when a staggered set of wheels are concerned.
As for ride comfort, when I got my 20s and non runflat tires I actually thought the ride got better. I made sure to go with a Rotary Forged wheel as well in order to keep rotational weight as low as possible. Here's a pic from today... I just installed new shocks and lowered it on H&R springs. The bottom is the before at stock height.

I can give you my advice. I have a 2011 X3 that had standard 17" wheels and run flats.
I did not like the ride feel and the fact that I could only find run flats to fit the wheels. I wanted a better road feel and better handling so I found a set of 18" wheels and got standard tires. Tire size is different to maintain the overall diameter. They fit great and the ride feel is better. In my research I read about going up 2" and decided not to. As somebody mentioned ride can be too harsh and price of both wheels and tires go up considerably. A good website for comparing sizes is rimsntires.com |
