Oyster with Brushed Aluminum or Wave Wood Trim?
Guys,
I ordered my X3 with oyster interior with wave wood since I really like the Anthracite Wood Trim from the new 5-series, which is a really dark trim color (see picture below). Since the dealer only had Siena Wood in stock and didn't have sample for me to look at, I made my decision based on the pictures from the configurator on BMW US website. After going through the real life pictures posted on the forum, I noticed that depending on the pictures, sometimes the wave wood looks really dark, almost black-ish (which I prefer) and sometimes it looks more like mahogany with red undertone. I am kind of confused as to what wave wood really looks like in real life? After playing with the configurator in the past few days, I am now leaning toward the oyster and brushed aluminum combination. I think it looks really clean and minimalistic. However, I can't seem to find real life pictures of this combination. Can anyone post a few pictures if you have that trim combination? Thanks alot!! |

Mine is alpine white with the oyster interior with the wave wood. It looks good. You are right it is dark. I almost took the lighter wood to give more of a break between the two colors but I like this because it gives a richer look. I also just got my windows tinted and that really put the finished touch to it.

For me the wood offered for the x3 looks rather fake and not on par with the wood quality of the 5 and x5. This is the main reason why I chose to go with aluminum with red brown leather.

I have dark wave wood in my X3 and like it better than the lighter wood, and way better than the alum. It is quite dark, looks rich, and (imo) does not look fake at all.

So would you say the top or bottom picture below is a more accurate depiction of the wave wood in real life? |

Based on my X3, the top pix is more accurate.

Mine is more like the second pic. The first pic looks really dark, but the second one seems almost too light...but closer to the wave wood on ours..

I had wood in 2 consecutive 330i's. The same spec wood was very different between cars. If you can't live with the chance that natural variations will bug you then don't get wood.
BTW the 2 pics....the first one is darker (less light) and less exposed. It seems like the wood in the first pic is darker but not by as much as the pics initially suggest. Look at the colour of the grey dash and compare....

I have the wood trim (fineline anthracite) in my Z4 and I would swear it is plastic. Happy to be told I'm wrong, but I didn't think anyone used real timber these days this side of a Bentley or a Rolls.

I'm not 100% sure but I think you'll find it's a REALLY thin veneer on a base (metal former maybe). The plastic look is due to the varnish. I know Rover made stuff like this when they were owned by BMW. If it were printed each one would be the same.

So after reading your responses, I decided to change the trim to brushed aluminum. Hopefully it will turn out good. If not, at least you guys will get to see pictures of oyster with aluminum combo.

Simulated wood patterns can be made so that parts look different from piece to piece, so variation is still no guarantee that it's real wood. |
