does use a transfer gearbox and the drive is always sent to all 4 wheels. 4wd is not defined by what's in the transfer box it is very simply defined by whether all 4 wheels are driven. So even the Haldex system is 4wd - after all even Land Rover use it....

Not just the A3 - the TT, A1, Q3 and new A4 all use the Haldex system. Don't forget the Torsen centre diff was not used on the early Quattros either.
