But for that matter, more than likely, if you were looking for a vehicle with the Sport package or with a 6 manual transmission, for example, and the dealership didn't have those in stock it would similarly cost them a sale. Yet certainly you are not going to argue that the 3 series equipped with the Sport Package or the manual transmission are seperate models from the non-ZSP or Steptronic models, right? Thus it is a fallacy to say that the criteria that distinguishes which car a consumer may accept vs. one they will reject when shopping for the car they wish to purchase is the same set of criteria that should be used to determine what constitutes distinct models.

Another way to see the fault in your logic consider a garden variety cars like the Toyota Camry. Certainly we don't consider the V6 Camry a separate model from the four cylinder Camry, correct? A Camry is a Camry. And we still would not consider them seperate models even if they called one the Camry-4 and the other the Camry-6, for example.
