Just to give perspective to what Lotus mentions, I've had my X3 for almost a month now and since day 1 have plugged an ipod via USB in the centre console and have left it there since. I connect to it almost every time I drive, and haven't once have physically disconnected it and had no problems (knock on wood!!).
Lotus - I'm with you that it has an auto-shut off for accessories, but is this something that is outlined by BMW within the owners manual.
I'm willing to do a test....will keep you posted.
