Ok - after not getting any takers on this forum, I removed the rear passenger door trim to discover (after very close inspection) that two wires in the window wiring loom had become mildly crushed enough to expose the copper and short each other, I repaired this by separating the two wires and taping up the exposed areas.
Problem solved. Hope this helps someone out there one day.
