1: Cardboard over the rim face, shrink wrap, stick label on tire tread
2: deflate the tires down to 10PSI and stick in individual shipping boxes and drop off at customer service center.

I live near a UPS customer service center so doing a little extra leg work would not be a big deal and the savings would be passed on to whoever buys them. I'm not saying the shipping is $50, but I'd imagine doing what this guy did would be a lot cheaper than option #1.
