It's the age of the Interwebz, and people will tell you what they want to be true, rather than what is. The X6 was a controversial vehicle, for sure. It got a slow sales start, but in its lifespan has met or exceeded sales targets.

The X6 and X4 are similar in that both are totally derivative of an existing platform - and in the case of the X4 one whose costs are several years deep into amortization. So it's not all that expensive, in the grand scheme, for BMW to bring the X4 to market - much less than it was for them to develop and introduce the F30, for example.
