The radio is HD (high definition) so if a radio station signal gets weak, the station will cut out. There is no static on HD radio. If you get a call, the system cuts out music and connects the phone call. If you put the idrive display on available radio stations, when traveling that list changes as weak stations disappear and new strong signals will appear.
Not sure why your iPhone cuts while playing music.
