Honda puts the gear shifter there to allow for more room near the floor or between the seats.
In the US, a comparably equipped CRV EX-L AWD w/Nav is $17K less than an X3. Would I spend it to upgrade? Sure. But from a strictly utilitarian/practical purpose, the CR-V is the better value.
