It is foolish to justify a decision because "racecars" do it. Race cars have different functions, setups, speeds, and rules that they are governed by. Because F1 used grooved tires does that mean we should all groove our tires for maximum traction? Nonsense.
They're not necessary and mostly an aesthetic option for the majority of SAV customers. It's disheartening to see the sheer number of X5's spec'd with the 20" 315mm rear tires. The trip from Whole Foods to Barney's New York hardly requires such an obnoxious aesthetic statement, no matter how much faster they'd make the 5500 lbs. behemoth go around the Nürburgring.

Regarding the race cars, I couldn't agree more.
