My understanding is that you can (will) get transmission windup. The 4*4 system needs the wheel diameters to be very close to each other, otherwise it's trying to fight against the rotation difference.
I currently run a staggered setup 245/40/19 Front, 275/35/19 Rear (from memory). It confused me, but with a wider tyre width you need a lower profile to make the diameter match.
It's also recommended that you use BMW * marked tyres especially if using a staggered setup. I've not seen conclusive evidence about what the technical difference is between * marked and non * marked tyres.
I learnt the hard way that you have to be very careful using non F25 wheels on the X3.
