Coming from a 335i vert all I can say is that the performance when pushed is like a video game, it's so frigging fast. The 3.0D won't be much slower. You simply can't drive it hard all the time, you will be dead or lose your licence, UK roads are just too busy. In fact with typical UK roads I have to rein back the power as especially with RFTs the car is getting thrown all over the road even with relatively gentle undulations. Yes you use the performance but not all the time. If you look at genuinely fast cars, mostly they are being driven around at sane speeds with just occasional "fun blasts", this is often how it is once you get over the initial thrills.
