It probably won't improve much because of
this. Diesels take a while to become efficient after the engine has started. In fact you're sometimes better off in a petrol if you mostly make many short trips. Mine is about 32mpg average because of the wife making lots of short trips and has 20,000 miles on it.
If I drive like Miss Daisy on the motorway I can still get 50mpg
