It was likely the N55 motor with the 8 speed automatic, which would probably be good for 0-60 in the mid 5 second range. Since you were in the mountains the turbo would have had and advantage over the M5 NA motor.
From those angles the X3 looks pretty good. I'm hoping that the spy photos and renders are wrong, and that they don't go the ML GLK route and ruin the front end. It seems the Germans are trying to keep the the small SUV/SAVs being considered too "feminine" by making them chunky and blocky.
