There are some people with 20's out there. BMW also offers 20" wheels on the newer x3's as an option so I don't think they are to large. Here are a few pics on e83's. The grey x3 on top with the eurokit has 20x8.5 ET30 front, ET20 rear. Looks sharp! So the 20x9 ET35 wheels you are looking at should fit nicely. And you can always add spacers down the road to push them out farther if desired.
