I have had the same issue on my car, its only ever washed by hand using Meguiars Hyper-Wash as a snow foam and Meguiars Shampoo Plus for the main wash and then Autoglym Autogloss Rinse Wax. I have in the past seen similar problems on the chrome window trim on the two Volvo XC90's I had before the X3.

I've been able to remove the stains by wiping around the trim with a cloth that I have sprayed a little WD40 on. A good short term solution but I got fed up with the marks last weekend and I used some Meguiars Paint Cleaner on all the trim which brought it back to pristine condition.
