Had the same problem with my new BMW X3. It has integrated tow bar but with only a subset of pins connected on the 13 pin connector.
Complained and the dealer rectified at no additional charge. Apologies not sure what was added but importantly it does not mess with the on board computer or Canbus system. I have had this problem with self fitted tow bar electrics on previous cars.
The X3 integrated tow bar works very well as does the electrics.
