it wouldnt recognize the usb stick either. it looks like the usb drive is dead.
Further research on the other bmw forums and they pointed this to a MULF module failure.
I will take the car to a local garage to replace the tail lights in a couple of weeks, will ask them to check the MULF module (if they know anything about it).
