for 2012 model year there was a $650 mandatory option called "BMW Assist with Enhanced Bluetooth and office capabilities"...this is in addition to the standard bluetooth/USB functionality. This option was free with tech pkg and it's required play Bluetooth audio.
Default firmware shipped with the car didn't play BT audio from my iPhone 4S but worked with my Xperia Arc. After upgrading the firmware, things were resolved.
