In your scenario, I'm guessing you have the CIC head unit. The amplifier is the top HiFi version and signal is transmitted over the fiber optic MOST bus.
Does this happen on all sound sources? (E.g. radio, aux, sat)
Most likely it's the amp. Unfortunately those are still pricey used. The one thing I'd suggest checking is to see if the amp has a cooling fan and if that fan is still working.
