Good question. I guess a test drive of both would be in order. I had tested the X5 once without the turbo inline six and found it too sluggish for me. The X5 is now equipped with the N55 turbo 6.

Here are the engine specs for the 2011 X3:

The 2011 X3 3.5i has the new N55 single-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six, rated at 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. With this engine the 2011 X3 3.5i gets to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds. The same rating from BMW for the 335i, however some car mags have gotten 0-60 in 4.8 sec in the 335i. BMW usually under states their performance numbers.

The 2011 X3 28i features the naturally aspirated N52 3.0-liter inline six, rated at 240 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque. With this engine the 2011 X3 2.8i gets to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, a half-second improvement on the previous xDrive30i.

I think the torque is more important than HP. 1.2 seconds difference is huge for the track, but perhaps not for a daily driver. As you can see the old 3.0i was half a second slower than the new xDrive 2.8i and may account for the sluggishness I found in the X5 test drive.
