Grinding during acceleration

Hey everyone. I had the inevitable trio of lights on my 2008 x3. The transfer case motor was the culprit. My local dealer wanted $2500 to replace the entire transfer case. They wouldn't just replace the bad motor. So I decided to try it myself. I bought a new gear for $60 to replace the stripped one in the motor. It wasn't too bad taking out the motor. A little challenging to take it apart and replace the gear but I was able to do it. Everything went in beautifully. I put it back in the car and took it for a drive. The lights didn't come on and things started out nicely. When I gave it a little gas, there was a loud grinding noise. It was either grinding or a really loud vibration. I brought it back in the garage and took the part back out to make sure I didn't forget something. I didn't. I put it back in, making sure everything was tight and tried driving again. Same thing. The grinding noise.
Anybody have any experience replacing this part or thoughts on this?
Thanks for you help
