Correct way to apply parking brake (automatic)

This might just be me having never owned an automatic but please bear with me.

Generally when I come to a stop in a parking place I press the P button on top of the gear selector. However I have noticed when I park on my driveway (mild downward incline toward the garage door) that when I then take my foot off the brake pedal the car rolls forward a couple of inches. Is this normal? Pretty sure it also happens when I use the P button behind the gear lever (the one that pulls the brake pedal away from your foot). And I don't believe I get the roll if I turn the engine off whilst I still have my foot on the pedal (and then remove it).

Thanks
Simon
