When kicking with your feet in, leave your feet there for a brief second before you pull it back. Swing left to right also works, but do not swing too fast.
I have 80%+ successful rate while my wife and kids has only 20~30% the most. Regardless, kids still got excited to try it every time we need to open the hatch.
