There's a lot of misunderstanding around on how the A/C works on the X3.
When in auto the fan adjustment means the max limit of fan speed you desire. It's clear that if you choose the first bar, the air will very gently flow and very slowly lower temperatures in the car. If you leave it to the max, it will blow cool air all around and cool the car down faster. Interesting also the way you can play with the wheel in the centre dashboard, that allows you to either get the coldest air in the face or to slightly reduce the freeze if you feel air to your face is a bit too cold.
