BMW made a change to the timing chain components of the N20 engine about 1/2015 that was intended to improve reliability. Some earlier models of the N20 engines have been updated with the redesigned timing chain parts.

In my opinion, not enough time has elapsed to be certain whether or not the changes to the N20 timing chain components introduced in 2015 have eliminated timing chain problems that may not arise until after 50K miles.
