People who go for the X3 instead of the 3 series is because they need extra headroom and trunk space. So now they basically took what appeals to the average X3 buyer over the 3 series and removed it all calling it the X4. 
The X6 never sold well and didn't make sense but this is even worse.

These aren't my kind of cars either, but the X6 sold pretty well worldwide (3x prediction actually). And these are high profit cars since they are on the same platform as the X3 and X5.
Like I said, I'd never buy one, but I understand why this exists.
