I had the same issue and fixed it.

My initial fear was that it was the transfer case servo actuator gear (which is one possible cause), but in my specific case, it was just an ABS wheel speed sensor, so a £20 fix.

I wouldn't drive it until fixed - those loud bangs are 'transmission wind-up' because the wheels are rotating at different rate, and the tension is building up in the system, and something expensive is going to break. Mine felt like the brakes where on while turning corners, until it banged.
