Having put off the issue for quite some time, I had my BMW dealer address my wind noise issue when my annual service popped up.
I never was able to be sure, but I heard there was a TSB related to pre-July 2011 production cars (my X3 was built in Jan '11). The TSB involved replacing (or adding?) insulation behind the triangle at the base of the side-view mirrors.
Guess what? Wind noise gone.
Kudos to BMW for getting it right.
