Tested the behavior on an X4 and there are some counter-force sensors in the system (duh!). You can easily stop the tailgate with your hand as it opens. Of course, there will be some amount of opening force from the tailgate, there will probably be dents if it hits something but for safety reasons, the tailgate will not force itself to a complete open if it hits an obstacle, it will just stop.
To sum it up - If you see that the tailgate is about to crash into anything, just stop it with your hand. Thats what I would do.
