The biggest 2 factors for fuel use are aerodynamics and weight and the 4 x 2 is virtually the same as the others. You need a certain amount of power (hence fuel) to move a vehicle at a certain speed so a small engine working hard will use the same fuel as a large engine having a easier time. I doubt you would get much over 45mg from the 1.8D and I can get that from a 3.0D!!!!
