The spring upgrade is hardware and software and there is a lot of uncertainty about when the touch screen will actually become available so I think it may be delayed.
I don't know for certain but I think it's very unlikely you'd get extended voice control by only updating the iDrive firmware. And even if you did, it would make such a bad job of translating SMS and email, you'd wish you hadn't bothered. Mine can't even understand "mum" in the phone book.
