The "throaty", louder system is delivered on 35i models only. It uses a "Dual-Path" muffler that uses a quieter path through the muffler for light load cruising and a direct "straight-through" path during start up, at large throttle openings, and during turbo boosted operation. A electronically controlled vacuum actuator switches the muffler path.

The 35i can get away with an almost direct exhaust because of the inherent noise reduction of the turbocharger's turbine housing.

The 28i, 30d and 35d models use a dual pipe, single path (always muffled) system.

The 20i and 20d models use a single pipe, single path (always muffled) system.
