As to efficiency and engine size, my son runs the previous generation (E83) X3. He was running the 2.0d manual but exchanged for a 3.0sd. The 3.0sd with premium performance and auto gearbox returns very similar mpg, within about 2mpg driving the same trips. But the 3.0sd is in a different league, performance that allows proper overtaking, is far more relaxed, sounds better as well. All for a couple of mpg.

Pete, I think you misunderstand what I was trying to say.
I'm trying to say that I buy cars for a bit of fun, not for the MPG figures... although I'm nowhere near BMW's figures lets just say I don't hand around!!!
I suppose I could drive at 55 all the way and get somewhere near those figures but I have the M6 toll right on my doorstep
