The idea was (is) that the engine and transmission need to work regularly through their respective ranges of loads, speeds, gears, etc. I remember when I was younger the mechanics preaching about piston ridges being worn into the cylinder walls.. and the piston arms needing to "stretch" properly.
Honestly, with today's engines and transmissions I don't feel compelled to follow much of a break-in ritual. I do make it a point to put it through different types of driving, but I have not hesitation to putting the cruise control on for an hour of highway driving.
One thing I do do... is pay for an oil change at about 1500 miles.
