The 18" Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2 ZP's are the winter tire I use on my 2011 X3 35i here in Nebraska. I'm very happy with them. Their ride is just fine -- no discernible difference from the stock Pirelli P7 all-seasons (which I've found to be very good tire). On dry pavement, the PA2's preserve the X3's excellent handling, so they're a perfect choice if you have mostly clear roads in the winter with occasional snow storms.
During a 10" snow fall last winter I took them out on unplowed, hilly streets and they were a champ. They're not as good on ice as a more aggressive winter tire, but that's so they can perform better on dry or wet pavement.
