I did this many years ago, and after talking to a few places and the transport truck driver himself, here is what I found:

* The truckers are all independent guys, there is no company they work for
* The companies are just a couple people in an office or even working from home
* They get your name into a system saying where you are, what you are transporting, where it is going to, and how much money is being offered
* When these companies say they'll do it for $XXX they are just putting your name in this system for that amount.
* The truckers decide to take it or leave it.
* Regardless of what company you use, you'll pay the going rate or you'll be left waiting until you do

A good company will do the middleman job and get your stuff hauled pretty quickly, but you will need to see what that rate will be to get the job done. It's all an opinion. Don't figure that a company will save you money, because they (normally) don't actually do any actual transport work.
