Hardcore off roading I agree with you. But trail running the x3 is great. Every year we trek down to West Virginia for camping hiking etc. I usually do old overgrown logging roads and my '05 x3 runs like a champ. We even dared crossing a short old trestle rail bridge once in the hills of Pocahontas County. That was a bit of a nervous hair raising stunt.
