salt under the bonnet

Hello,

Last week it was snowing in the North Eastern US while I drove to the ski hills. The X3 35i was excellent in the snow. I was passing everyone using the unplowed lane without any drama.

Being a new car, I had to wash it when the weather and roads were clear. To clean the upper grill and headlight assembly I had to pop the hood. I noticed there were alot of salt stains in the engine compartment. Is this normal? Do others have this mess in your engine compartment? I cleaned the superficial upper sections, but what would be the best way to clean the whole compartment?

Hmmm...maybe it was the flooded roads when the snow melted.
