Put very simply:

A single turbo charged (twin scroll) 3 litre diesel engine is fitted to the 30d and produces 258bhp.

A twin turbo charged 3 litre diesel engine is fitted to the 35d and produces as far as I remember 312bhp.

They are both very rapid vehicles and neither will ever disappoint.

BMW continue to confuse the public with their car numbering system. In the US (and some other countries), the 4 cylinder turbocharged 2.0 litre gasoline engine is named the 2.8i. Also the later X5 has a 3.0 litre twin turbo charged diesel engine called the 40d.
