The better question to ask is why NOT buy a diesel?

only two I can think of is $$$ (diesels cost more than comparable petrol versions) or if you don't have Diesel stations around you.

If the new 35D is offered in the US and for $3K or less premium to the 35i, there is no reason not to buy the Diesel, especially if we get a ~$1500 tax credit! speaking for US buyers of course.
