When my X3 is parked with the engine running, and I get out with the key fob in my pocket, there's an immediate message popup on the iDrive screen. I don't know if the same message pops up if my X3 is in gear. It's unlikely that she would have missed the message.
I too wonder if the second key fob was in her purse. If not, then something is wrong and a trip to the dealer is called for.
