In some cases, it's all in software, in others, it can also require additional equipment (maybe a motor or control box). So, it will be interesting to see if it can be done with just s/w.
In either case, at least for now, since it hasn't been approved by the DOT, while unlikely, it could create problems for you if it were implemented. Personally, I think it is really neat tech, and if I had laser based headlights or a system that could support the feature, I'd want their full functionality, too.
