The visibility of the film depends on a few factors:
-Thickness of the film
-Color of the vehicle
-Quality of installation

That last one is more important than you think, which is why I would try to disuade anyone from a DIY job. When the pro installed mine on my E90 it took him 10 hours, and he'd done hundreds of them.

On a white car like mine, the edges of the film are almost invisible. You have to know where to look to see them. However, there is a slight yellowish hue under certain light conditions and angles, due to the adhesive not the film. This is minor and I haven't minded it (after four years). With darker colors like blacks, blues, greens, etc. you would not notice any yellowing but the edges might be slightly more noticable.
