I think people need to start to get it out of their head that BMW can build more focused cars like Porsche while trying to compete with Mercedes and Audi. No way is that in any way possible. The auto industry has changed a lot and quickly since the days of the E46 and E39. In order to reduce costs, volume is the only way to go for BMW. And if you think a large amount of resources went into these cars, you've totally missed the point and purpose of why BMW is doing what they're doing.
Ok, valid points. I just feel that at some point, "there's always somebody out there" becomes an issue of ever-diminishing returns with each additional X model to get those additional somebodies. They must have done the math to feel that the net increase in customers would be worth the additional dev, marketing, education, training, certification costs.
